Sam was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia on December 2006. He had no symptoms and the diagnosis was made after a routine blood test. He was an alumni of Stuyvesant High School, and both witnessed the event a few blocks away as well as attended school in the immediate area afterwards.
